"Zoro was Dumped and left to die in front of a church, will divine providence help him?"

Who We Are

Action for Singapore Dogs (ASD) was established in December 2000 as a non-profit organization with the mission to improve the welfare of stray and abandoned dogs in Singapore. ASD was officially registered with the Registry Of Societies on the 3rd July 2002.

We aim to fulfill our mission through various activities and programs including rescuing, fostering and re-homing of stray and abandoned dogs, advocating sterilization as a means of controlling the stray population, heightening public awareness of the responsibilities involved in pet ownership and highlighting the virtues of our local dogs.

ASD also works with official institutions and other non-governmental organizations in order to synergize the efforts towards alleviating the plight of the local stray dog population. Regular events are organized to raise funds for veterinary care of rescued dogs and to promote adoption of our local dogs.

As a non-profit, non-governmental organization, all our work is carried out solely by volunteers and through contributions. Initially comprising of 3 volunteers, the group has now grown to about 20 odd core volunteers.

"Honey - With a horrific leg wound unlike any seen before, what will become of her? & Sweetie - Both hips fractured, she lay broken in spirit and body. Will you help her?"

Why We Do This

We believe that all animals big or small deserve a life of love and care, not just a life of fear and survival. There are thousands of healthy stray dogs that are put to sleep every year, due to lack of space, resources and non acceptance by the majority of society.

We choose to believe that each and every one of them deserve a second chance at life, and that includes the many sick and diseased strays that will never be given that chance to be healed, or a chance to experience the love and warmth of a home.

We work with a simple philosophy of 'One dog at a time', and every dog under our care is precious to us. With that philosophy, we adhere to a very strict code of no-kill, and we will do what it takes to ensure the dogs in our care receive the optimum care and protection, regardless of their health condition.

"Kara - Not all hit and run victims die ..."

The Future

We aim to generate greater support for this cause and to develop a sturdy foundation of committed members who will be willing to speak up and help these helpless creatures, and to slowly change the bias of society to accept these wonderful creatures, so full of love and loyalty.

A Cry For Help

When animals are afflicted with pain and ailments through abuse or otherwise, they do not have the voice to speak out, they can only suffer in silence. We have to hear them and we have to help them.

Unfortunately, the cost of treatment often outweigh the resources that we have. That is why we have to appeal to like-minded people like yourself to help them. A little from everyone will help to cover the cost of treament and help to save a life.

In this section you will see dogs with life threatening or severe injuries and ailments which require urgent help and contributions to see them through their most critical period. You will also see the Unseen Ones, dogs which are under the care of ASD but require long term care and love due to their condition.

If you can and wish to help these animals in need, you may contact us about our contributions or you can help us by making a purchase at the gift gallery or booth. At the same time, we'd like to say a Big Thank You to all who have supported or are supporting us in our work. The animals would also like to say Thanks in their own special way !

The Sowers Group - "To Love is to Serve"

Who are we?

"The Sowers", is a young Adults' voluntary group attached to the Novena Church which has been engaged in Community Service for the last 29 years !

On Sunday afternoons, The Sowers set out to sow the love and sunshine among the less fortunate in our society, who would spend their time almost unnoticed by the outside world.

We spend the afternoon at a home for the less fortunate, providing a listening ear, consoling them and helping out in chores to brighten their day !

Meeting Point : Carpark of Novena Church

Meeting Date & Time : Every Sunday, 1.30 pm

Duration : 2 pm to 5 pm

Transportation : You can park your car, if any, at Novena Church and leave with us in a bus that will be provided

Sep 07 Schedule for our Home Visits :

16th - Villa Francis

23rd - Bukit Batok Home

30th - St Theresa's Home

For charity, there is no denomination. All are welcome to touch the hearts of those in need of love, care and concern.

Love cannot remain by itself--it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action and that action is service. Whatever form we are, able or disabled, rich or poor, it is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing; a lifelong sharing of love with others.
Don't only give your care, but give your heart as well. The dying, the cripple, the mental, the unwanted, the unloved-- they are Jesus in disguise. - Mother Teresa

This is just a prelimary posting. I will share with you my experience in my next posting.

Yellow Ribbon Funding Project

"I'm really still in prison and my love, she holds the KEY, a simple yellow ribbon's what I need to set me free....".

The 3 lines from the lyrics above, aptly describes how ex-offenders are actually incarcerated in 2 prisons. The first is the physical prison, and it is a matter of time before ex-offenders are released. However, when they are released, they enter into a second 'prison', which is the psychological and social imprisonment. The "she" who holds the key to unlocking the second 'prison', refers to the ex-offender's family, friends, neighbours, employers, colleagues, volunteers, religious group and the community at large.

This Sat i.e. 8 Sep 07, we will be setting up a booth at the main entrance of Novena Church for the sale of some merchandise in support of the Yellow Ribbon Fund (YRF). YRF would contribute to the development and implementation of reintegration programmes for ex-offenders as well as support programmes to strengthen families of ex-offenders.

Please feel free to drop by in support for the YRF.

There is a power in a simple yellow ribbon. Acceptance, forgiveness, and chances can transform the lives of ex-offenders and their families.

Adele's Experience with Acres Roadshow on 18 Aug 07

Helping to run a charity roadshow, though voluntarily, entails a decent extend of responsibility...or perhaps its just me who tends to excel wholely by doing my best, in my best attitude, in what i do and in what i have a passion for.

Prior to the roadshow, i read up as much as i can about Acres as a non-profit organisation, its objectives and its purpose of running merchandise sale, donation and educational roadshows/events. To put it simply, the proceeds that are collected will go towards its campaigns in ending the exploitation of animals and in building S'pore very first Wildlife Rescue Centre. For details, you may refer to http://www.acres.org.sg/

I arrived light-heartedly at the Acres booth at The Atrium Orchard at abt 4.50 pm, 10 mins prior to my shift from 5 pm. Just wish to be punctual, a little consideration for my co-peers who may be waiting for me to take-over. Thinking that i wld be manning the booth by marketing Acres merchanise (using my strength in sales) and sharing with those who comes by my now superfluous knowledge about Acres, i was handed a "coin tin". I was then told to find a permittable "spot" and start collecting. For a moment, i saw myself selling flags in my good old school days. Feeling rather awkward and stunned with my coin tin, i decided to stand by my objective in volunteering with Acres i.e. to help in whichever area that is much needed, and to continue with a delightful attitude.

I found a spot where there are flows of human traffic between Plaza Singapura and Dhoby Gaut MRT station. Like my co-peers, i stood by comfortably smiling and raising my tin and the educational brochure towards people who walked by. After a mere 5 mins, i gave up. That technique doesnt work at all and i received $0 donation! I decided to adopt Adele's "fun" technique instead i.e. to approach boldly with an open heart.

I began to have fun...by approaching and even chasing people with my sunshine smiles and my very own intro..."hihi, wld u like to donate to the Animal Wildlife Rescue Centre. It goes to the wild animals that have been captivated." I also became playful by deliberately catching some of those who discreetly walked away by surprise! As donors start to reach out their pockets, purse and wallets, i took that opportunity to educate them about Acres and cross-sell our merchandise. I went on for a full 3 hours, with no in-between water/toilet/sitting breaks. In the midst of my approach, i experienced many sorts of people...1) people who rejects Acres/u by ignoring u totally, shooting challenging questions and dnt donate, quote PM Lee's name (?), detouring their walkway entirely and those who are not so much "for wild animals" and 2) people who respond with yr smiles & approach by smiling back whole-heartedly, donating surprise amounts, donating their 2nd-3rd rounds, complimenting u , joking with u, genuinely asking questions to understand more about Acres and requesting to be a volunteer of Acres too!My results : a pre-1/4 filled coin tin filled to the brim with coins and notes of $2 and $5! I was complimented by the organisers whilst beginning to become conscious of my aching legs, lower back and left arm (which i used to hold the increasingly heavy tin). Still, what an experience it was for me yesterday and i left Acres with a truly fulfilling 3 hours!

ps : dear, i wish that u were there to run the event with me, for i know that like me, u wld have put yr heart & soul in the charity drive and together we wld achieve even greater results. I know it may sound silly, but i assumed u were there yesterday, quietly cheering me on ("jia you")...anyway, i have specially selected 2 items from the Acres merchandise for u (see below). Does the dog in the pic look familiar? Yes, its a "dachshund".... Like the dachshund, shall we reach out for light & hope together?
